Prof. Dr. Paolo Brenner

Dr. Paolo Brenner is Professor for Cardiac Surgery and responsible for the Cardiac Xenotransplantation Program at the Dept. of Cardiac Surgery, Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU, Head Prof. Dr. Ch. Hagl), Munich. He received his M.D. title (on ACE-Inhibitors; he is co-inventor of Ramipril) in 1995. In 2004, he successfully finished his German PhD (Habilitation) utilizing a preclinical non-human primate xenotransplantation model and various transgenic pig hearts. 2011, Dr. Brenner qualified as apl. Professor.

From 1998 till 2004, he was supported by the Bavarian Research Foundation, thereafter from the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG). He is member of the Collaborative Research Center TRR-127 which was recently extended until 2024. Together with Prof. Bruno Reichart, he finished the worldwide first successful series on orthotopic cardiac xenotransplantation which was published in NATURE and the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation. He received several awards: EACTS 1998, ESOT 1999, Rolf-Becker-Award 2019, TTS-IXA 2019 and Ernst-Derra-Award, German Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery 2020.
